How to Adapt Your Culture to Support Your New Covid-19 Safety Practices
As businesses begin to reopen, great attention is being given to the measures required to keep employees and customers safe. And many of those measures are simple behaviors: washing hands, wearing masks, staying six feet apart, etc. But those measures won’t succeed unless they become norms. And though you’ve taken all these steps to adjust your work environment to help ensure the safety for your employees and customers, a new challenge has now arisen of getting your employees to adopt these new practices, and do these things, every time, for however long it takes.
Success during the ongoing pandemic hinges on our capacity to hold each other to new norms of responsible behavior and social regulation.
Yet in a recent study conducted by VitalSmarts, Inc. (authors of Influencer: The New Science of Leading Change) of 1062 respondents, 3 out of 4 admitted to being nervous about infection risk when interacting with others. And yet, 7 out of 10 people admit to saying less than they think they should to keep themselves and others safe.
